Rhinebeck Reformed Church

Reopening Protocols and Guidelines

The Rhinebeck Reformed Church is eager to resume public worship in a safe and responsible manner and in coordination with state and local government and health officials.

To that end, we are proposing a phased plan which follows the latest guidance from the CDC, our denomination, state officials, and attorneys, and which, at the same time, respects our traditions. We believe that public worship can continue to take place safely in an era of social distancing.

Our plan includes the following policies and procedures:

Cleaning

  • Our church will undergo a deep cleaning, which will be carried out by a professional cleaning company.

  • Frequently touched surfaces in the church (pews/pew tops, door handles, microphones, etc.) will be cleaned and sanitized per CDC recommendations after every liturgy.

  • Restrooms will be cleaned prior to and after worship.

Entering the Building

  • The church’s entrance doors, when the weather is cooperative, will be propped open to limit contact with door handles. The doors will be open during arrival and departure times.

  • The church’s door handles will be regularly sanitized and disinfected.

  • Signage will be placed on entrance doors instructing anyone with fever or flu-like symptoms not to enter the church.

  • Congregants must wear masks prior to entering the sanctuary. A box of masks will be available in the vestibule and narthex in case a fellow worshipper forgets to bring his or her mask.

  • Hand sanitizer dispensaries will be available at all church entrances. Please sanitize hands prior to entering sanctuary

Seating (approximately 70 people can be safely accommodated in lower sanctuary)

  • Attendance at each individual service will be limited to no more than 25 percent of a church’s occupancy permit.

  • Seating arrangements will reflect social distance guidelines of keeping interactions of others at 6 feet. So, pews will be roped off to ensure worshippers are seated at an appropriate safe distance.

  • Families can sit together.

  • Couples in a committed relationship can sit together.

  • Church friends cannot share a pew.

  • Balcony seats may become available.

Departing

  • After the benediction, we may assign congregations to leave by sections to avoid contact caused by overflow.

Worship Protocol

  • Passing of the Peace will be not be employed by the church. No physical contact, such as handshakes, hugs, etc.

  • No announcements/time of sharing.

  • Gifts can be deposited in a box located in the narthex and will be gathered and processed by authorized tellers. Gifts can also be mailed in or submitted online. (Send us a message through the website for more information.)

  • Singing, though admittedly very uncomfortable, can only take place with a mask on.

  • Our chancel choir director and music ministry team director can fulfill the role of a cantor, but a choir and praise team, as we are accustomed to, will not be used.

  • Gradually, we will allow singers to share in worship as they are spaced out and wearing a mask.

MEET OUR PASTOR

Rev. Luis R. Perez is the 33rd pastor of the Rhinebeck Reformed Church.

Since his arrival in 2003, the congregation has experienced a period of spiritual rebirth as evidenced by annual double-digit membership growth and the creation of dynamic outreach and spiritual development programs, such as the co-founding of a lay hospital visitation program, a summer speaker series, and the co-development of youth mission projects, among other initiatives.

The Rev. Perez was trained at the Yale Divinity School,
where he earned a Yale President’s Public Service Fellowship, and
he studied journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he received a fellowship as part of a workshop
to write about religion in Israel and Gaza.

MEET OUR ORGAN

This is our 1892 historic Roosevelt Pipe Organ. It is named for Hilborne Lewis Roosevelt, a pioneering organ builder, telecommunication engineer, and a member of the Roosevelt family.

Hilborne was not interested in either business or politics, the traditional Roosevelt family occupations. Instead, he was musically and mechanically inclined and wanted to be an organ builder from an early childhood. He entered an apprenticeship at an organ factory and later traveled to Europe for further training in the field. He was one of the first to study the application of new electrical devices to the manufacture of organ actions. Hilborne founded the Roosevelt Pipe Organ Builders in 1870 with his brother Frank, and built some of the largest organs in the United States during his career.

Our organ has been loved and cared for since it's installation and is played every Sunday at our weekly service!

MEET OUR CHANCEL CHOIR

We are grateful to have such a dedicated group of people to guide us in singing beautiful hymns each week. It's a pleasure to watch and hear such elegance.

MEET OUR MUSIC MINISTRY TEAM

This is a musically gifted group of folks who sing each Sunday in celebration of the Lord. The instruments creating the music include the bass, piano, and guitar which are accompanied by a few amazing voices.

SUMMER SPEAKER SERIES

Throughout the summer months, we welcome notable scholars and leading authors to serve as keynote speakers to address a societal relevant theme. This is a time for spiritual growth.

Rhinebeck Reformed Church is a nearly 300 year old congregation with a timeless mission. That is, to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and to provide fellowship and spiritual uplift to church members, to the larger Rhinebeck area, and surrounding New York communities as well as to visitors to our area.
